Family Functions

When you are part of a large family, there are quite a number of occasions of functions that you’re to attend. Sometimes the distances to be covered are in hundreds of kilometres.

This weekend is one such typical ones where a death of a relation suddenly changed the priority and complexity of family coming together.

We had a baptism and a landmark birthday which were pre-planned and roles assigned for us to meet and celebrate.

Death consumed one relative when cancer won the prolonged fight. Baptism had to go on and the birthday celebration narrowed into a much sober event for the sake of mostly the relatives by marriage some of them who don’t even know the person who died.

But the question is, if we missed out on the chance of being with the person when he was alive while making sure to attend the funeral.

Both are important and to participate in the last journey is an obligation, expression of love and affection and something which people of our area are very particular about.
