Virtual Friends in Focus. Like Never Before!

There’s no denying the fact that the best way to enjoy and cherish friendship is with direct interaction. In fact virtual connections are being called the bane of this era.

Perhaps it’s now, that the importance of virtual connections and interactions are much in focus in a positive way.

Personally I am a proponent of virtual connections and social media interactions. Perhaps it removes many barriers in physical interactions like logistics, time and availability.

Now, why virtual connections are in focus! We are in one of the most difficult phases of our lives. The Corona virus has made the world to plunge into an atmosphere of fear. People are afraid of each other, afraid of inadvertently contracting the virus or passing it on to loved ones.

Most social interactions are being reviewed! Sports and entertainment cancelled, travel in jeopardy and the world is afraid and lonely.

Here’s where the virtual world has a role. Interact and support our dear ones. Let it be known that nobody is alone. Love and affection can cure anything. The virus, economic downturn all are temporary.

The opportunity comes with huge responsibility. Don’t ever spread rumours. The social media is for sharing love and friendship and not to frighten.

Just talk to friends, let them know that we’re in it together. That we will make a better world.

Communicate and let it be known that we do care.

Build Facilities, Will Win.

Jayanagar Sports Complex, Bangalore

The basketball court in Jayanagar now got the board supported by the crane like structure. What it does is that the players can concentrate on scoring without fear of a head injury, hitting the post when it was nearer to the play field like it was before.

In fact I see such facilities coming up or constantly getting improved in Bangalore. The swimming pool complex in Jayanagar is getting upgraded to Olympic standards. There are 50 meters pools and heated pools in many places.

First five of the 25 states in medals tally in Masters National Games in Vadodara

Certainly it’s the facilities and opportunities that put the state of Karnataka, way above in the medals tally.

I do hope that other states would take notice and build sports infrastructure. After all, health wellness are equally important to winning medals.

Some campaigning will be in order.

Speeding Fine! On New Year

I got filmed for speed on the National Highway during daytime on new year day 2020. The offence was clocking 76 kms per hour and the photo showed no other vehicle nearby.

Well Kerala keeps 70 kms as limit on National Highways passing through the state. And there used to be a 10% margin of error before fines are imposed.

Not anymore. The ₹1500 (over 20 dollar) fine is three times the previous rate but ₹3500 less than what was initially proposed. Apparently the state government expects people to be grateful for such a massive reduction though it’s still a 300% increase.

Everyone knows that we can’t fight it but pay as the rules for recourse are painful. And I paid.

I am not a speed driver and I keep applying the brakes to bring the vehicle speed down. Well we used to press the accelerator for any speed when we were driving old model cars. But now with better roads and new cars, the brake is used to control the speed to the old limits.

That’s not all the story. It’s practically impossible to speed on congested roads on a regular day. Then how will the fine department meet the stiff targets set for them!

Catch all and sundry for violation. No grace or allowance for margin of error. Interestingly on the day I got the fine notice, social and mass media were full of the story of a drama company getting fined some ₹24,000 for carrying drama cutouts of certain height in the vehicle. The conclusion in the media is ‘what else they can do to meet the targets’

Apparently the remuneration for playing the drama was ₹25,000. They still made ₹1000 for the entire troupe.

My regret, is that people don’t still recognise me as a daredevil habitual speed offender.

No high, gutty macho image!

Cochin Airport, best in many counts, but may not be wheelchair friendly!

Raised design strips crisscrossing airport floors.

Completed well in time, within original budget cost and beautifully designed, Cochin airport is the only one in the world run fully on solar power.

But the beautiful design and these red oxide strips crisscrossing the floor is a hurdle for wheelchair patients.

Wheelchairs use mostly lifts and it’s really hard to escape these hurdles before reaching the lift doors.

I would think that it’s an oversight, but would be a noble thing if it can be rectified so that the wheelchair passengers could be pulled on smooth surface.

Something the Cochin International Airport Authorities would do well to take a look .

Fitness Consulting

I chose fitness consulting as an activity, as i have something to share from my personal focus on fitness as a tool to age well.

Perhaps the compelling reason is the positive results of intermittent fasting which I have been following for over a year now.

Intermittent Fasting is the wellness program where rich rewards are on offer with perhaps the easier sacrifices. And I am confident in suggesting the routine to my friends with just one caution of consulting the doctor on restricting any prescribed medicine, only during eating window.

Nobel Prize winning studies and researches on both animals and humans are suggesting unimaginable positive benefits of this period fasting and delaying food intake.

Naturally, this attracts a large number of experts on the subject. This is good as long as a commercial interest or powerful lobby do not influence a slight variation for the sake of the product or idea they are paid to promote.

Honest sharing of personal experience is important and that’s what I am aiming to achieve here.

Today’s focus is on fat burning and weight loss with intermittent fasting. 12 hours into fasting, the food based energy released by liver get completely used up. Then starts the fat burning.

If so, exercising vigorously during the fasting hours after 12 hours should accelerate fat being used more as fuel.

I adjusted my schedule accordingly, doing some good yoga and weights during the last few hours of fasting.

But the improved energy levels and concentration seem to be getting affected, with something like a fatigue setting in. Of course the one hour weights have been vigorous with six packs in mind.

Going through some researches and studies, it indicates that the fat burning is almost the same when working out on empty stomach or with food fuel. Worse, vigorous weight training on empty stomach could result in getting muscles used as fuel and resultant muscle loss.

I am shifting schedule again with weights and swimming moving into the eating window with just yoga during fasting hours.

The results and observations will be shared here and in the Intermittent Fasting Group.

Bengaluru! Still Bangalored!

E-Waste Drop Box

So many good things are going for Bangalore. This e-waste drop box, I found on the main entrance to the BBMP (Bangalore Municipal Corporation) head office.

One good thing is the weather. Well almost! You may find nursing some allergy while enjoying the weather. But it’s cool, literally.

The Namma Metro has plans to cover the entire city. The stretches completed are full with users. The progress is slow. But it’s the snail which won the race.

There’s greenery everywhere, justifying the old name of ‘garden city’. Then there’s Lal Bagh, the biggest and the best.

And then there’s traffic. The city just won the number one in the world title for the worst traffic.

But we remember the snail 🐌

Fitness Consulting!

I have recently updated my LinkedIn profile as a ‘fitness consultant’.

Fitness has been a passion from early years and I used to work out regularly with not much of a result in looks and body shape, except during my stay in Hong Kong where the gym in the building was fabulous and youngsters were looking at me for advice as I could show some muscles.

But the 45 minutes non stop swimming at the house pool while working in Philippines didn’t produce much results with weight slightly increasing. And I blamed osmosis!

Later a Kuwait based friend introduced me to Intermittent Fasting. And, like in all passions, I started on it religiously on the 19th of January 2019. I am even mentoring a whatsapp group on Intermittent Fasting.

Studies followed, as being a mentor vested in some responsibilities. These studies led to workouts during fasting hours to accelerate energy usage, fat burning and the onset of autophagy.

I have now a schedule of only water for about 16 to 18 hours from dinner, serious yoga from 12 hours into fasting, some weights and gym before a late lunch which is first meal from dinner on previous day. The major exercise swimming however is just before end of the 6 to 8 hours eating window, but It has also the competitive masters game as objective. These workouts burn about 1200 to 1400 calories a day.

Autophagy is the main objective where cellular repair, less inflammation, prevention and cure to some deadly diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, cancer etc are indicated.

But there’s a problem! The experts on the subject seem to promote a product and to do that might be altering the speech to highlight the benefits of that product to boost autophagy. Coffee, bullet proof variety of it, green tea, dark chocolate etc are good for autophagy, but may not be good during fasting hours. All these and Keto can be during eating window. One expert even suggests that toxins are not cleaned during autophagy, instead accelerates it’s release into body. The expert runs a residential detox program franchise. You see!

So, there’s an opportunity for fitness consultant. And I am thinking about it. The aim is to advise unbiased and researched solutions to fitness.

How High is the Bar!

8 hours 15 minutes and 15 seconds. That’s how long George Hood all of 62 years stood on the plank position to set a new world record.

This news has such a humbling effect on me, a self proclaimed fitness enthusiast and an advertised performer.

I do planks, and i feel like on top of the world when i cross 3 minuets on the stop watch in front of me.

There’s a whole new world of physical fitness thresholds out there and there’s no harm in trying out something new all the time. There’s no guarantee that one would be anywhere near the possible levels, but there’s always the satisfaction of trying. Better be a competitor than a passive spectator.

Practice, practice and practice is the mantra. It need not be for the world record, but try to be the number one in a private group.

But dream, set the imagination at the world level, aim for the moon, one will at least be the winner at the local club.

And most importantly, you get fit and continue to be an athlete. Champion of ‘dreams come true’.

How High is the Bar!

The Fitness Club. It’s not easy, even with pain.

‘No pain, no gain’ is the fitness mantra! But pain alone doesn’t guarantee the gain. It’s complicated!

I have been a sports enthusiast and been aware of the need to be physically fit. But the pain that I was prepared to go through had limitations. That at least gave the reason to be not looking that good.

Then I decided to look fit, and in the process decided to take in the pain for it. But then the results made the pain quite sweet.

I admit, Intermittent Fasting, swimming long hours, doing weights and yoga including 12 full sets of suryanamaskar are not easy, but worth the pain with reduced weight, toned body and tremendously enhanced mood as gains.

Sharing success and not so inadvertently showing off are all good things. For that, better knowledge is handy and hence all the reading and research. But, there’s a problem!

There are so many experts out there. They agree with the proven and Nobel Prize winning theories, but add riders. These riders are confusing and sometimes quite upsetting. And one could suspect some commercial interest behind all the riders and modified theorems.

Some of them, however warrants attention. For example, the objective of intermittent fasting is autophagy. One expert agree with the cellular repair and other benefits of autophagy, but highlights a theory that it doesn’t cure or remove toxins, but actually accelerates toxins in the body. Symptoms mentioned include insomnia and hair loss.

Well I have trouble with good sleep and lost most hair, while I know that I am in autophagy stage with Intermittent Fasting. Do I need a toxic detox!

The dilemma is that the good doctor who’s alerting me of toxin output of autophagy is also a detox specialist offering 3 month residential detox programs.

The best way is to pool in genuine responses from our own small group. Then our small intermittent fasting group is of high relevance.

I am happy to invite more friends to join in the broadcast group. Send your interest as whatsapp to my number +91 9400056031 and benefit from real unbiased experiences and practical solutions.

Workout Well and Think Hard.

I learn most from my young friends and it’s one of them, a Harvard trained medical research student, who introduced to me how the brain exercise compliment overall fitness.

I have been contemplating on regulating my workout schedule to stay fit, train for the next level in swimming competition and become a worthy fitness consultant, when the new dimension comes into attention. Exercise the brain by thinking hard.

While the planned workout schedule of yoga, swimming and weights could border extreme workout at my age, I am a novice when it comes to challenging the brain.

That’s I avoid crossword puzzles, complex maths, chess, riddles and even scrabble. The same young friend introduced ‘Dopamine’ to me sometime back and I let it pass thinking it’s complex.

My thought process and thus any brain challenge is like that of an idiot. Now I have to think how to change it. And it’s complex and hard. Perhaps that’s just the beginning of challenging the brain.

I can feel the brain is in attention and what’s required, perhaps, is to pursue the thinking process though difficult and very hard.

Yes, think hard!
