Cooking Exotica…… Chakka Unda (jackfruit balls)

When you want traditional cooking, nothing is more apt for a keralaite than the chakka unda.

This delicious jackfruit product lasts very long as it is cooked extremely well.

My mother’s sidekicks Orotha Chedathy and Parel Chedathy used to decimate 5 big jackfruits by the time you blink. Oh well! I forgot to time mine for this small pile- an hour!!!

And the fruit with some ghee and spices in slow fire for a few more hours make it into a thick pasty state which can be rolled into balls which then are coated with some fried rice powder.

33 Chakkappazham undas! May not be fit for a king, but who cares! Even the privi purse is abolished…The question was “WHO IS GOING TO CLEAN UP?”

Looks yummy πŸ˜€ I haven’t tasted these. Jackfruit halwa, idli and paysum are my favorites πŸ˜€ and of course, not to forget the very famous jackfruit chips πŸ˜€

    1. Oh yes Rekha. And home made jackfruit chips are way too good compared to the ones in shops.
Perhaps I will be able to send you some next season. Anyway we will be in touch. After all friends are here to stay

  2. I am not an expert when it comes to cleaning Jackfruit but might have needed little less time. I would love to eat fresh fruit but when in abundance we make cake, called dhondas in konkani.
